Career Readiness

My passion for life runs strong and deep, I am only as bold as the company I keep. From a young age, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I would stay up late watching Dateline NBC and Lisa Ling’s mini documentaries on OWN and NBC. I knew that I had to be on the frontline of some of the world’s most important events and issues. I knew that I had to document those things so that the world would know. I have always had a passion for writing and storytelling, and what better way to combine those than being an investigative journalist.

My experiences at Mason and the classes that I have taken have only made me more excited for the future and what’s to come. However, I don’t feel prepared to venture forth into the unknown without the safety net of college to catch me. I know what I want to accomplish, but I mainly have a fear of the process it will take to accomplish these things.

As I approach my last semester here at Mason, I have adopted the mantra that Thoughts become things, If I think I can, then I will. It won’t hit me that I am out in the world alone until I graduate, walk across that stage and collect my diploma. Only then will I officially be prepared for the world ahead. For now, I will continue to enjoy my last moments of college with my friends, enjoy time with my family, and work hard to ensure that I have a secure future when I leave. I strongly credit the LEAD Office and Career Services for giving me the confidence and the wherewithal to say I am not ready yet, and that’s perfectly fine. One major aspect of being a good leader is accepting the things you cannot change. I cannot change my feelings at this moment, but as I said before, thoughts become things. If I think, then I am.
